Amazon Wholesale Product Research Criteria: A Complete Guide for Virtual Assistants

Welcome to this detailed guide on Amazon Wholesale Product Research. If you're learning to become a virtual assistant or planning to start your own wholesale business on Amazon, understanding how to evaluate and select products is essential.

We discussed how to perform manual brand hunting. Now, we move forward with understanding the product research criteria you should use to determine which brands and products are suitable for the wholesale model.

Why Product Research Criteria Matter

When dealing with the wholesalemodel, we aren't creating our own private label products. Instead, we look for existing branded products that are already selling well on Amazon and then apply for wholesale approval directly from those brands or their distributors.

This method requires a set of well-defined criteria so that we don’t waste time on products that:

  • Are not profitable
  • Are overly competitive
  • Require approval in restricted/gated categories.
  • Do not offer margin even after wholesale pricing.

General Product Research Strategy

Before using any advanced tools, you must first manually evaluate brands and their products based on publicly visible information on Amazon.

Here are some essential steps:

 1. Look for Existing Sellers

  • Search for a product on Amazon.
  • Check how many other sellers are already selling it (me too sellers).
  • If 3–10 sellers are sharing the Buy Box, this could be a good sign.
  • Too many sellers = price wars
  • Only 1 seller (especially if it's Amazon) = avoid it.

 2. Check if Amazon is a seller.

  • If Amazon itself is selling the product (and dominating the Buy Box), avoid it.
  • Amazon usually has lower pricing and better logistics, making it hard to compete..

3. Confirm Brand Ownership

  • Ensure the product belongs to a real brand, not a generic item.
  • Visit the brand’s website. Check if they offer a wholesale/distributor application form or contact email for B2B partnerships.

Key Product Criteria for Wholesale Model

Use these detailed metrics to shortlist the right products:

Number of Sellers (Me Too)

3–10 sellers sharing the Buy Box

Between $15 and $40

Not Gated/Restricted

Prefer ungated categories (like Pet Supplies, Kitchen, Toys).

Stock Availability

Not Fragile or Seasonal

Prefer evergreen products, non-breakable items.

Advanced Research Tips

Once you have a potential product, apply these additional checks:

 Visit the Brand Website

  • Look for a “Wholesale,” “Become a Reseller,” or “Distributors” section.
  • Collect contact information and prepare a professional email requesting a partnership.

Use tools like Jungle Scout or Helium 10.

  • Track monthly sales volume, FBA fee estimates, Buy Box rotation, etc.
  • These tools help you validate your manual findings with data.

Use Google to Find Wholesale Portals

  • Search: Brand Name + wholesale
  • Open websites from the footer → Contact Us → Apply as a reseller.

Wholesale Product Research Examples

Let’s say you’ve found a brand selling “pet grooming gloves”:

  1. You search it on Amazon and see 5 sellers sharing the Buy Box.
  2. Amazon is not among them.
  3. Monthly revenue is $7,000.
  4. The product is not fragile or seasonal.
  5. BSR is under 50,000.
  6. The brand’s website has a “Become a distributor” page.

This could be a valid wholesale opportunity!

Final Thoughts

Every seller and trainer may give slightly different product research criteria, but the core goals are the same:

  • Find profitable products.
  • Avoid high competition or restricted items.
  • Work only with reputable brands.
  • Get approval to resell.
